What is  Birdwatching

Birdwatching, also called birding is the recreational observation of birds, unlikely scientific study of birds by ornithologists. This birding hobby can be done with a naked eye or with use of specialized equipment such as telescopes or binoculars. It also includes listening for bird sounds. In fact, lots of bird species can be more easily detected by hearing than by watching, so audio equipment is often very important part of birdwatching devices. Dedicated birders from around the world often travel to different countries to get engaged in birdwatching. In the beginning, birdwatching was a leisure activity practiced in developed countries such as the United Kingdom and the USA. However, since the half of 20th century a growing number of people from other countries in the world have become engaged in this recreational activity. There is also an activity in Great Britain known as twitching which describes pursuit of rare birds. Twitching is very developed in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Ireland, Netherlands, Sweden and Finland.

There are millions of birders throughout the world, making birdwatching one of the most rapidly growing and most popular hobbies in the world. It is often enjoyed and practiced as a family leisure activity, since is suitable for people of all ages. It can be very useful activity for children as well as for adults because of its educational characteristics; birders not only learn about diverse bird species, but also about bird behavior, migration, even geography and landscaping. Another benefit of birding is physical activity involved in this hobby. Birdwatching is great exercise appropriate for people of all ages. Observing birds in various localities includes lots of walking, hiking and moving in general. Furthermore, it is challenging and enjoyable in terms of identifying and recognizing new species. In addition, birdwatching is environmental friendly and inexpensive activity.

Birding Equipment 

Birding equipment commonly used in this activity includes binoculars, spotting scope with tripod, field guiders and a notebook for registering observations.
To be a truly dedicated birdwatcher, a person has to poses some qualities desirable for successful birdwatching. First of all, he or she has to be patient since wild birds are unpredictable and a good birdwatcher has to be patient enough to wait silently for the right moment to observe birds without being frustrated or bored. Secondly, the birder has to be environmentally conscious and actively put effort to preserve unique bird species and their natural habitats. Also, he or she should promote conservation methods such as recycling. Furthermore, good birdwatcher needs to be observant in order to spot unusual bird species and to distinguish species. Another quality of successful birder is enthusiasm and willingness to travel, observe and learn about bird species.
